Camp Kawaga offers a balanced, well-rounded program. Boys who are skilled athletes and those who are not all love Kawaga and find their own niche here. Every day offers endless opportunities for both athletic and non-athletic activities. We encourage campers to be active and participate in all areas of camp.
A typical day consists of two morning periods of instruction in activities that campers choose, followed by 90 minutes of uninterrupted free time (called Open Areas), during which they can participate in a wide variety of sports, water activities, and non-athletic activities. We also have instructional swims three days a week during morning Open Areas for 45 minutes. It’s important to us that Kawaga campers learn to swim and are comfortable and safe in the water. The afternoon begins with “Leagues,” our popular intra-camp competition during which boys play on teams in a variety of sports and camp games. Afternoon Open Areas follow Leagues. Evenings are special at Kawaga. After dinner, we typically have a full hour-plus of Open Areas, followed by (what’s the highlight of the day for many campers) our Evening Program, which could be anything from special Kawaga games and activities to our 100-year-old powwows.
Our team sports are open to all campers who choose to participate. Yes, we do play to win. But we consider the experience a success if we participate, play hard, and display the best sportsmanship. Campers find the athletic atmosphere at camp laid back and self-motivating. If they want to find competitive games with friends they can, but mostly everyone just plays for the fun of the game!
